The falsification of idiosyncrasy as self-indulgence

What is idiosyncrasy? What Oxford says is 'a mode of behaviour or way of thought peculiar to an individual'. That's what I believe too. But what I want to talk about right now is not idiosyncrasy but I failed to find a better word. Suppose, there is an artist who's been consistent in satisfying himself along with the audience members. And the artist was also consistent in creating pieces of art. Then one day he took a decision. The time required for such a decision has been down-scaled to a day while it takes a much longer time. He chose to experiment with his art. He made this piece which was something no one was ever exposed to. To talk about the consequences of such an assumption, there are two contours for that.

1. Community level :
There is no such piece of art that all of humanity ever disliked. Every piece of art, if not popular, has a niche audience. So, the other audience might claim their works to be self-indulgent. But when it comes to the other part of the audience, they might find it too troubling to watch something that's so self-aware. But I still feel that the piece served its purpose as it made its mark on a community level.

2. Individual level :
The interpretation of one piece varies with the individual. What might not interest me might interest someone else. Me not liking it doesn't nullify the purpose of that piece. But what can one talk about if we don't find a solid ground for our opinions? Without a common ground, anything problematic can be struck out as opinion. So, how can I label something as self-indulgent if all I am gonna consider is my opinion without including its impact and influence?

Let's take an example. When Twin Peaks: The Return was premiered, I remember Tarantino saying that Lynch had gone too much up his ass that he(Tarantino) is not interested in watching his further works. But years later, Twin Peaks: The Return has gained a niche audience. But does this change the intrinsic value of this work? I doubt whether Tarantino changed his opinion on this work but I feel the intrinsic value of art is beyond opinions and is related to the artist only if not to anyone else. So, labeling something unconventional as self-indulgent without structuring a proper opinion and a solid ground and without enough time (to see its impact) is just rubbing your opinions.
